- A skilled birth attendant is an accredited health professional who has successfully undergone formal education and training. Skilled birth attendants are commonly trained in managing normal pregnancies, including prenatal, childbirth, and immediate post-natal care. Skilled birth attendants are also trained to identify, manage and refer complicated pregnancies to appropriate health care providers.
- Traditional birth attendants are excluded from these estimates if they have not undergone formal training.
